Echudina

Pronunciation

Meaning of Echudina

In Cuban usage, the belief is that it means "Echu of the flame/fire." In Yorùbá language, "Ès̩údínà" means "Èṣú blocks the road (from enemies)."

Extended Meaning

This name is used among practitioners of the Òrìṣà tradition that developed in Cuba, formerly more commonly known as Santería and now known as Lucumí by modern practitioners. Practitioners of the Cuban Òrìṣà tradition no longer speak Yorùbá language outside of liturgical usage, so there is no understanding of the processes of assimilation and elision that occur in the Yorùbá language. When practitioners see a name with "ina" at the end they assume it has to do with the Yorùbá word for "fire" - iná.
