Olókun is regarded as male or female depending on the region or tradition, traditions in a communities that border the ocean and thus worship Olókun as a body of water (the Atlantic ocean) often regard Olókun as male, traditions in which Olókun is worshipped in communities away from the ocean (where Olókun is often represented with a pot) consider Olókun to be female.
