The root Oṣó in most Yorùbá names comes from the deity of farming and fertility called Òrìṣà Oko. But the word "Oṣó" also means the same as "wizard" or "sorcerer" which is the interpretation that most people, including the name's most famous ambassador (Wọlé Ṣóyínka), uses. A link between Òrìṣàoko and sorcerers may be because the orisha is a powerful sorcerer who fights against evil sorcerey.
