The precise etymology of "elú" is unclear. But from word-of-mouth reports (see: Elúfowójù), one way of interpreting it is servitude (ẹrú), i.e. The name is derived from people freed from servitude at some point in the past. In the case of this particular name, a notable person from that lineage of Elú has just departed, hence the giving of the name to a new child. Like Babátúndé, the name submits to the belief of the Yorùbá in the continuation of life.
