Ọnìfọ̀nṣaè

This is the name of my maternal great-grandfather from Ìlárá-Mọ̀kín, Ondo State and my grandmother's maiden name. His mother, Èjí, was a priestess of Ọbànìfọ̀n, the deified Ọọ̀ni of Ifẹ̀ Ọbàlùfọ̀n who is regarded as a fertility deity. She prayed to Ọbànìfọ̀n to grant her a child. Upon the birth of her son, she named him Ọbànìfọ̀nṣaè, meaning Ọbànìfọ̀n did not lie to her and kept her promise. The name was later shortened to Ọnìfọ̀nṣaè and is used by her son's descendants. Names with the prefix Ọnìfọ̀n are limited to the towns of Ìlárá-Mọ̀kín and the Àkúrẹ́/Èkìtì region.
